Are meta tags important?

The meta description tag is there to provide a concise summary of what the page is about. 

 

The above example contains the keyword 'DVD rental' in the description tag, information about the service and the call to action 'Join now!'.

 

The meta keywords will help Google to identify what your page is about.

You should write the keyword tags like this: “beans,eggs,sausages,bacon,chips” with no space between each word, only a comma.

 

Limit the number of keywords in the tag to a maximum of 25.

Sitemaps make it easy for search engines to visit your site and find everything.

There are two types of sitemap that can and should be used. The first is an HTML sitemap. This is really a page that is structured in a fashion that allows people to navigate the site and all its content easily.

 

However this has really been superseded by the search engines joint standard of XML sitemaps, which is the most important.
